The iaw’s members usually conduct their research in the form of projects involving interdisciplinary teams that are formed in accordance with the research topic.
A large proportion of the projects are financed by third-party funds, which the research units acquire themselves. Significant funds are provided by the Bremen Chamber of Labour in addition to national funding bodies and foundations for research funding (German Research Foundation (DFG), Volkswagen Foundation, Hans Boeckler Foundation) as well as public and state contracts (EU, national and federal state ministries, municipalities and associations).
The iaw’s work employs the entire spectrum of social scientific research methods: quantitative and qualitative methods are used and combined where appropriate in national and international comparative studies, sector analyses, evaluations, developing scenarios, case studies etc.
